Having lived in Chicago, IL well over fifty years, Alvin Louis Sparrow Sr. returned to his birthplace enjoying retirement. Born in Baton Rouge, LA, on October 7, 1937, Alvin was 84 years young. What a solider he was, “our captain” fought diligently after beating COVID. He fought a lengthy battle from other complications related to the disease, surrendering his life on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. He was born to late Leler Hawkins O’Connor and Clarence Sparrow and raised by his late stepfather, Thomas O’Connor.He was a honorable Vietnam Veteran who not only loved his country, but everyone he encountered. He was stern, yet he gave to abundantly. He was the neighbor that all could go to. He served as a faithful member of Christ Community Church in Chicago, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Merlon M. Jackson. Upon his relocation to Baton Rouge, Alvin was a member of Greater Mount Gideon Baptist Church where he was baptized by the late Pastor Edward Howard. COVID prevented so many people from congregating, nonetheless, he was shepherded under the direction of Rev. Manny Metoyer. He was such a ubiquitous individual with an entrepreneur spirit, (always bartering or trading something to sell). He was referred to as “Al”, “Mr. Gold”, “Big Daddy”, “Big Al” and many more affectionate names. He retired from Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) as a bus operator. He was a father, friend, grandfather, uncle, cousin to many as in his mind, he never met a stranger.Alvin leaves to cherish his many memories his daughter Christine Sparrow, Baton Rouge LA, Marlene (Kazeem) Oloko, Chicago IL, two sons Alvin (Patricia) Sparrow, Baton Rouge, LA., Michael (Saundra) Sparrow, Gonzales LA, Sherese Thurman-Lott, Laura Sparrow, both of Chicago, IL and two stepchildren Sonia Sylvester, Chicago, IL and Robert Sylvester, Las Vegas, NV. Five brothers, Melvin, Larry (Trimina), Leroy (Paulette), Donald (Betty), Thomas Gerald, and Morrison O’Connor. Four sisters in laws: Edna L. Sparrow, Pinkie (John) Clark, Leontine D. McCall (Stewart) and Leonetta Dillon and brother-in-law, Donald George, all of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 13 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Preceded in death, his parents, siblings, Rufus Sparrow Sr., Lloyd and Brenda Jean O’Connor both maternal and paternal grandparents.
